Jimmy Stewart’s performance in After The Thin Man was his breakthrough. What is your favorite debut performance? Reel 13 Classics host Neal Gabler chooses James Dean in East of Eden.

My favorite debut performance was that of Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday”. Even her co-star, Gregory Peck, knew her performance was just the beginning of a very promising career—and wasn’t it ever?!! He knew she’d be a star after that film and insisted she get second billing in the credits right after his name. What a generous guy!

My favorite debuts in film would have to be Patty Duke, in “The Miracle Worker. Harold Russell in “The Best Years Of Our Lives” and Jennifer Hudson, in ” Dream Girls”.

Neil Gabler incorrectly stated Jack Lemon’s debut was in Mister Roberts when it really was in It Should Happen To You the year before.

A dazzling mature debut was Glenn Close in The World According to Garp.
