Who is Harriet Beecher Stowe?

After the loss of her young son in 1849, Harriet Beecher Stowe empathized with the enslaved mothers whose children were taken away from them, inspiring her to write "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Published in 1852, the book became an international bestseller, exposing thousands to the cruelties of the "peculiar institution" of slavery.
