RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY PROVIDES SPECIAL CAMPAIGN COVERAGE IN SERIES OF ELECTION REPORTS
Washington, D.C. — The Thirteen/WNET-produced PBS news program RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY will feature special reports on the religious views of the Democratic and Republican candidates, the issues important to Catholic and Jewish voters, plus a roundtable discussion focusing on the ethics of covering a candidate's personal and religious life as part of its continuing “2008 Campaign” coverage. The segments will be included in consecutive shows to be distributed October 10 and 17 at 5 p.m. ET (check local listings).
On October 10, program managing editor Kim Lawton will look at the religious beliefs of John McCain, Barack Obama, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden in her report on “What the Candidates Believe.” RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY host Bob Abernethy will also lead a journalists' roundtable studio discussion on the ethics of covering a candidate's personal and religious life featuring PBS Ombudsman Michael Getler, Kelly McBride with the Poynter Institute and Tom Rosenstiel from the Project for Excellence in Journalism as guest panelists.
The following week, October 17, correspondent Lucky Severson will travel to Pennsylvania — one of the key election swing states — to talk with Catholic and Jewish voters about campaign issues important to them. For more information on these reports, visit the program Web site at: www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics.
Now in its 12th season, RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY is the only national television news program devoted entirely to the news of religion, spirituality, and ethics. Major funding is provided by Lilly Endowment Inc. with additional support from Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, the Henry Luce Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and individual supporters. Executive editor and host for the program is Bob Abernethy; executive producer is Arnold Labaton. Thirteen/WNET executive-in-charge is Stephen Segaller.
