BLISS BROYARD

Bliss Broyard is the author of the memoir One Drop: My Father’s Hidden Life—A Story of Race & Family Secrets (Little, Brown). Her father, the renowned New York Times critic Anatole Broyard, was a light-skinned black man who chose to “pass” as white, a fact she learned only 10 days before his death from cancer in 1990. Broyard then began researching her father’s African ancestry and the family story that became One Drop. In 2001, she helped to organize a family reunion in New Orleans that brought together almost 100 Broyards from the black and white sides of the family for the first time.

In addition to One Drop, Broyard has published a collection of stories, My Father, Dancing. A frequent contributor to Elle magazine and The New York Times Book Review, her fiction and essays have been anthologized in Best American Short Stories, The Pushcart Prize Anthology and The Art of the Essay. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and daughter.
