RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY HONORED WITH CINEMA/CHICAGO AND GABRIEL AWARDS

Washington, D.C. - RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY, the Thirteen/WNET New York-produced PBS news magazine program hosted by Bob Abernethy, has been recognized for broadcast excellence in industry awards competitions sponsored by Cinema/Chicago and the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals.

RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY received a Silver Plaque in the 2007 Chicago International Television Competition in the "TV News Magazine Series" category. Presented by Cinema/Chicago and the Chicago International Film Festival, these awards recognize the best in television from around the world with winners demonstrating "unparalleled creativity, technical virtuosity and strong production values."

RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY was also honored with a Gabriel Award in the category of "Short Feature, National Release" for "Scott Neeson." This segment, produced by Trent Harris and reported by Lucky Severson, profiled a Hollywood film executive who left his glamorous studio lifestyle behind to begin an entirely new career helping the disadvantaged and impoverished children of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. For more than 40 years, the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals has sponsored the Gabriel Awards to honor works of excellence in broadcasting - programs, features, spots and stations - which serve viewers and listeners through the positive, creative treatment of concerns to humankind.

In addition to these recent honors, the program has received four Cinema/Chicago Fest Awards and a 2003 Gabriel Personal Achievement Award presented to program host Bob Abernethy in recognition of his outstanding work and leadership in the broadcasting community.

For more than a decade, RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY, produced by Thirteen/WNET New York, has been providing distinctive, cutting-edge news coverage and analysis on PBS. Funding for the series is provided by Lilly Endowment Inc. with additional support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Mutual of America Life Insurance Company and individual supporters. Executive producer is Arnold Labaton. Thirteen/WNET executive-in-charge is Stephen Segaller.
