African-American Spiritual Quilts
Feature, Original Broadcast Date: February 20, 2004 (Show #725):
The special exhibition, "Threads of Faith: Recent Works from the Women of Color Quilters Network," features 53 quilts produced by African-American artists, which are currently on display at the American Bible Society in New York. Handmade by 33 members of the Women of Color Quilters Network and divided into five thematic categories, the quilts reflect the role of faith and American Christian traditions within the African-American community. Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, curator of this exhibition, describes how these quilts celebrate and express the meaning of faith in the lives of the artists and their collective legacy. "Some of the quilts have been inspired by Biblical quotes. Some are commemorative quilts . . . some of the quilts deal directly with prayer. . . That's the connection between religion and art. To know or have knowledge of our own humanity and our own spirit. We are on a spiritual journey to know ourselves."
