The world's largest performing arts institution is undertaking a renovation that is already changing the Upper West Side. It will alter the way New Yorkers look at this national treasure. It is the biggest transformation since the initial ground breaking almost 50 years ago. Hosted by Rafael Pi Roman, New York Voices unveils the new Lincoln Center with President Reynold Levy and Liz Diller, the lead architect of the $500 million renovation that she calls "an architectural striptease."
Peter Gelb is transforming two-hundred-year-old operas by using 21st century technology for opera buffs and new younger audiences alike. New York Voices goes backstage to observe an army of people who support the singers on stage: scenery shops, costumers, and wigmakers who are virtuosi in their own right. Gelb is planning a "reconstruction" of his own for The Met, which includes $20 day-of seats, a family friendly version of Mozart's The Magic Flute in English, high-profile collaborators such as Broadway Stage Designer and Director Julie Taymor, and live HD simulcasts in movie theaters worldwide. For opening night Gelb, the former head of Sony Classical, engaged Anthony Minghella known for his work in films like Cold Mountain and The English Patient to direct Madama Butterfly. This Butterfly was simulcast live to Times Square complete with vivid staging and liberal use of Japanese Bunraku puppets. Mr. Gelb talks about his past and the future of the Met.
Can you listen to something without really hearing it? Rob Kapilow helps audiences young and old to hear how composers created their music and the elements of a successful piece. He has a unique ability to communicate his extraordinary passion and understanding for music. And it's not just classical music but everything from Gregorian chants to hip hop. In the "What Makes It Great" series at Lincoln Center, Kapilow dissects works for the audience, leads them to the composers' ideas, and instills a deeper appreciation of what makes great great.
