NYC Dept. of Health & Mental Hygiene
Sunday, May 9th, 2010
Shawn Lesflores is entering his 13th year of employment as part of the city’s pest control efforts. He’s part of a crew that goes where Sanitation won’t, cleaning out trashed homes and burned buildings that serve as open invitations to rat infestation and assorted pestilential horror. Despite years of service and union membership dues, the team now fears for its future, as it’s first in line for the city’s upcoming budget-driven layoffs. |

Thank you, Shawn. Thank you and all of your co-workers for the thankless job and services that you perform for me and all New Yorkers. The next time I pass a crew that is cleaning the debris and filth left in abandoned and burned out building, I will think recognize these otherwise faceless people and remember you. Thank you for putting a face on what I and many New Yorkers take for granted.
I live in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a neighborhood that is working to overcome it’s history of arson, poverty and crime. Yes, this neighborhood is making a comeback, but because of your video I realize that it would not have happened without under paid, hardworking folks like yourself. And, thank you PBS for raising our individual and collective conscienceses about the “Every Man.” It is truly he and she that make this city and the world at large a hopeful place to live.
I wonder if the rat problem at Collect Pond Park is a result of losing Pest Control Aides: http://nyctheblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/downtown-manhattans-collect-pond-park.html
