As a child, when the air raid sirens went off, I went to my grandparent's home (where we live today). Mom would go to the firehouse/first aid station and Dad would go to his air defense lookout tower. My grandparents and I (after making sure all lights were off and curtains were drawn) would gather in front of their old upright radio and listen to the news. I still remember the orange radio dial (sort of church window shaped). My Dad took me to the air defense tower and I remember him reporting planes coming and what type, how many and what direction they were traveling. It still amazes me a couple of times my folks drove us to the Atlantic Highlands and we could see ships burning off the New Jersey coast. Victims of German U-Boats.
