As a young child we moved to Virginia and to Washington D.C. to be with our dad who was a director with the U.S.O. Between moves we lived in Brooklyn. No one had very much money during that time and we lived with our maternal Grandmother between moves, with whom we permanently stayed with after the war.

I remember the cellar had canned food, water and toilet tissue. It was the designated bomb shelter. My brother and I had the 'fun' job of stirring the 'white' butter with the small pkg., orange colored, to make 'yellow butter.'

We were young and war talk was not done in our presence. Doors on the street had black and purple crepes which indicated a death.

While in D.C. my Mother took us to Franklin Roosevelt's funeral procession.
