Students dealing with poverty, abuse and instability at home often have a harder time achieving academic success and going on to higher education. The non-profit Children’s Defense Fund-New York advocates for children’s rights to education, health, safety and equity. As part of our ongoing initiative “Chasing the Dream: Poverty and Opportunity in America,” we have a look at the organization’s Beat the Odds scholarship program, which recognizes a handful of students who have overcome tremendous obstacles.

Chasing the Dream: Poverty and Opportunity in America is a multi-platform public media initiative that provides a deeper understanding of the impact of poverty on American society. Major funding for this initiative is provided by The JPB Foundation. Additional funding is provided by Ford Foundation.
