Anna Deavere Smith‘s career as an actress, playwright, professor, author and social activist has been marked by extraordinary versatility and extraordinary success.

In her signature form of documentary theater, Smith first interviews real people and then creates and performs them as characters. PBS’ Great Performances will broadcast an encore presentation of one of her most famous plays, Twilight: Los Angeles, on June 12.
