Jonelle Procope: The Red Rooster, Where Else?

The Red Rooster is located on Lenox Avenue between 125th and 126th Streets in Harlem. It's known for serving up comfort food by chef Marcus Samuelsson and for live music. Flickr/gsz

I love the Red Rooster. The environment and aesthetic is warm and sophisticated without being studied. The food is a blend of southern-inspired cuisine with the introduction of seasonings and recipes divined from chef Marcus Samuelsson’s many life experiences.

Most of all, I love the Red Rooster because it is a sterling example of cultural diversity at its most authentic. It’s a place where regardless of the time of day, there is always a gathering of extremely interesting and friendly people and, better yet, it’s just up the street from the Apollo Theater!

Jonelle Procope has served as president and chief executive officer of the Apollo Theater Foundation, Inc. since 2003.
