Daisy Martinez: Hollywood in Brooklyn

I live in Prospect Park South and it seems like there’s always a film crew down here. They filmed scenes from “Sophie’s Choice” (screening at BAM on Nov. 28) in my neighborhood, “Reversal of Fortune,” and more recently I’ve seen crews from “Boardwalk Empire.”

I remember looking out from my house and seeing Uma Thurman sitting in the window across the street. She was filming “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.” Just the other week, Queen Latifah was up the block.

I think the uniqueness of the houses is what draws Hollywood to this neighborhood. The Frederick and Loretto Kolle House, better known as the “Japanese House,” at 131 Buckingham Road was built in 1902 when Orientalism was fashionable. The Japanese architects didn’t use a single nail and the interior is filled with delicate glass doors and windows.
