I sing in a gospel choir in the East Village with about 40 other people. It’s based out of the Middle Collegiate Church, but people from all backgrounds participate.

Rehearsals, every Thursday, are open to everyone — no auditions are required. Whenever I’m there, it just feels very New York to me.

Shanta Thake is the director of Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, where she presents over 800 shows a year giving voice to an unmatched diversity of talent.
