I’m excited about “Word*Rock*&Sword,” an upcoming series organized by singer-songwriter-guitarist Toshi Reagon. It’s billed as a “festival exploration of women’s lives.” The festival includes issue-driven panel discussions, like a talk with formerly incarcerated women, belly dance classes and on Sept. 24, there will be a musical celebration  at Le Poisson Rouge. The week of events culminates with a tarot card reading with a chef/healer. Toshi is an incredible artist who always fuses activism and art so I’m excited to see her work.

Shanta Thake is the director of Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, where she presents over 800 shows a year giving voice to an unmatched diversity of talent.
