Joan Rosenbaum: Shmaltzing Up Shakespeare
Eve Annenberg directs and stars in “Romeo and Juliet in Yiddish.” The film was released in 2011.
I recently saw a fabulous film “Romeo and Juliet in Yiddish” by filmmaker Eve Annenberg. The film follows a group of young Brooklyn Jews as they put together a Yiddish language performance of the Shakespearean classic. They all come from orthodox backgrounds and their struggle with that identity plays out onscreen.
Joan Rosenbaum recently retired from her 30-year tenure as director of The Jewish Museum.
