Dana Buchman: Law & Order Unplugged

Anyone arrested in New York has to be arraigned within 24 hours. Even former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn made a stop at the Manhattan Criminal Court Building. AP/Andrew Gombert, Pool.

There’s a little known secret of how to spend an evening in New York City: Go to night arraignment court at the Manhattan Criminal Court Building on 100 Centre Street. The cops are there with their guns looking bored, the harried lawyers are arguing with the judge, it’s almost like watching a television show. You’ll see case after case as they try to get prisoners arraigned as quickly as possible. The cases represent a wide cross-section of New York. Some people are in for minor offenses like holding an open alcohol container in public, some are more bizarre like a man who had tried to jump off the Empire State Building. Dominique Strauss-Kahn went through this process but I still haven’t seen any celebrities in person… yet.

Dana Buchman has always been a creative, designing woman. Her fashion label can currently be found in Kohl’s stores nationwide. She lives with her husband, a judge, in TriBeCa.
