Welcome to the BLOGSPHERE

TUE, JAN 14, 2003

The explosion of personal Web logs is certainly one of the key online developments in recent years. Some individuals occasionally choose to share their views on politics, reality TV, and more; others publish what can only be described as public diaries.

Such blogs allow anyone and everyone an equal opportunity to voice their opinions and share their feelings. And this phenomenon is not limited to just the average Joe. Wil Wheaton, a former actor in Rob Reiner's film STAND BY ME and on STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, has a popular blog, through which fans can get a better understanding of the actor's real life and beliefs. In the future, Web logs could become a fahionable component on the Web sites of the latest fan-friendly pop icons.

The sudden vastness of this virtual social community can seem daunting, perhaps even counterintuitive. As one blogger puts it: "You ever get the feeling like there is no one that could possibly understand you, then you get a blog and nobody comes to it and then you feel even more alienated? Yeah, it sucks ..."

Yet there are creative ways of making cyberspace a little more navigable. NYC Bloggers is an ingenious portal to blogs based in New York City. Nearly 2,000 blogs are organized by the subway stops where their respective blogger lives. Simply click on an interactive subway map to find out who is blogging, for example, by Times Square or the 23rd Street A Train stop.

Another excellent portal is Eatonweb, which organizes almost 9,000 blogs by subject category, language, nationality, and letter of the alphabet.

Blogging sites such as Blogger.com, jjg.net, and Metafilter.com are among the growing number of sites that allow people to post their blogs to the world. While the means may vary from site to site, the results are the same: Web users around the world can instantly become bloggers, their written pieces available for all to see.

If this interests you, don't hesitate! Blogging is open to everyone, and you can start today.
