Once Upon a Blog. A long time ago, in the hazy middle years of the decade nineteen-hundred-and-ninety, between the darkest reaches of dial-up and the Ethernet, a creature was born. It was not of this earth but, rather, the first-born child of the Internet. Its name was ... blog.
A blog, short for "Web log," is an interactive, online personal commentary. Blogs tend to look something like the Web page you're reading right now, with text generally written by the page's editor, called a blogger, who espouses his or her various opinions about any number of subjects, from current events to pop culture to preferred brands of model airplane glue. "Like Kryptonite to Stupid," the site of Oliver Willis, is a good example of the multiple-themed blog: Willis addresses foreign policy, sports, and Britney Spears, among other sundry items.
The blogger will often link to online articles (a news story on CNN.com, for example) that provide context for the issue(s) the blogger wants to address. Many bloggers also offer prominent links to other blogs that the blogger finds interesting, useful, or fun.
InstaPundit.com, which Professor Glenn Reynolds created and updates several times daily, offers commentary on politics and also links to scores and scores of other blogging sites.
Some blogging sites are not controlled by an individual; rather, anyone who wishes to participate can register and blog away 'till your heart's content.
Many bloggers generally address themes that have little or nothing to do with politics. Megan McArdle, for example, focuses her blogs on economics, a logical choice since she happens to have an M.B.A. Her site, JaneGalt.net, invariably addresses politics, but her background means that she can analyze economic issues in ways that many journalists cannot.
Anil Dash does not shy away from politics either, but his blogs often reveal his strong technology background. Just as McArdle is more likely to blog confidently, competently, and articulately about Alan Greenspan than most writers, Dash can assess the FCC -- in both political and practical terms -- better than most journalists.
More on Blogs. Web blogs first appeared in the late 1990s. As bloggers began compiling lists of other blogs, a community began to emerge in which information, ideas, and opinions were exchanged and developed.
If you'd like to know more about the history of the blog, Rebecca Blood's history and perspective on blogging is an excellent source.

The Tintinnabulation of the Blogs, Blogs, Blogs
There are thousands of bloggers out there, and we can't show your all of their sites. But some have already submitted their sites to us (see below). You, too, can show us your blogs by using the form above. Unfortunately, we may not be able to link to all submissions, and we will not be able to post your sites immediately.
Please note: The sites listed below have been submitted by visitors of this Web site. In listing the links below, the producers of this site are not approving, supporting, or in any way responsible for the content of the sites listed.
