Writer Joyce Purnick discusses Lindsay’s role in keeping New York City calm during the night Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated.
Joyce Purnick has a very selective memory, as do we all. There WERE riots after the King murder in Harlem! That is a fact that cannot be hidden. There WAS looting there. To compare what happened to what happend in Newark is no answer. Indeed, Lindsay’s policing policies allowed the rioters to remain unprosecuted to this day and encouraged further anti-social behavior.
