OVERVIEW

In this lesson, students will explore the Harlem Renaissance in New York City. They will conduct Internet based research, work in collaborative groups, conduct a survey, focus on racial issues that permeated jazz, learn about the varied jazz musicians, poets, and artists that flourished during this era, write poetry, listen to jazz, and create presentations based on their developing knowledge.

OBJECTIVES


1. Students will research information about the Harlem Renaissance.
2. Students will read about the history of Harlem.
3. Students will conduct a survey.
4. Students will listen to jazz music.
5. Students will participate in a discussion on racism in the arts.
6. Students will complete a writing assignment based on their research.
7. Students will read and respond to poetry from the Harlem Renaissance period.
8. Students will explore art of the Harlem Renaissance period.
9. Students will create an artistic representation of the Harlem Renaissance period.
10. Students will create a class museum or play which depicts the Harlem Renaissance period.
