
OVERVIEW
In this lesson students will explore jazz, art and culture with an
emphasis on New York. They will conduct Internet research focusing
on varied elements of the New York jazz scene, such as the music,
the artists, and the venues. They will compare varied definitions
of what constitutes jazz in order to further their understanding of
the complexity of this art form. They will examine the role of culture
in artistic expressions, engage in a debate, and create a presentation
based on a particular jazz musician.
OBJECTIVES
1. Students will begin to develop understandings of jazz music.
2. Students will listen to jazz music.
3. Students will begin to develop understandings of how the culture
of New York influences jazz.
4. Students will read varied definitions of jazz, and develop more
complex understandings as a result.
5. Students will conduct Internet research.
6. Students will conduct a jazz survey.
7. Students will create a presentation based on their research.
8. Students will engage in a debate.
9. Students will investigate jazz performances in New York City, and
create an itinerary.
