Prolific American author Gore Vidal passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86. A renowned novelist, playwright, and screenwriter, Vidal was a controversial figure of both the literary and political worlds since the release of his first novel, Williwaw in 1946.

Since 1995, Vidal has been a guest on PBS’ Charlie Rose an impressive four times! Take a look back on his life and works through these interviews with the late writer, and tune into Charlie Rose Friday, August 3 at 11 p.m. for “An Appreciation of Gore Vidal.”

His fictional-historical novel, “Lincoln”, was my favorite of his. Great imaginitive retelling of Lincoln’s definitive and chaotic years as President, Commander in Chief, breaker and healer of the country, and target of intrigue and assassins.

I received this email today, Aug. 6, where you encouraged viewers to look on Aug.3 (?) Appreciation of Gore Vidal
So is your date a misprint?

  • Michelle

    Hi Maury,

“An Appreciation of Gore Vidal” aired on Friday, Aug 3. Although the airdate has passed, the full episode can be viewed online at Charlie Rose’s website, here: http://www.charlierose.com/

American Masters’ “The Education of Gore Vidal” will also air Thursday night (8/9) at 12:30 a.m. on THIRTEEN.

Apart from the incongruity of “thursday night at 12:30 AM” which is ambiguous– Friday morning or Thursday morning? –both timeslots–late night Wednesday (ie Thursday morning) or late night Thursday (ie Friday morning)–show on my TWC programming grid as offering Tavis Smiley, NOT American Masters.

  • Michelle

    Hi Justin,

The show is airing late Thursday night (really, Friday morning) at 12:30 a.m. Perhaps the schedule page had not been updated yet or was cached – it looks like American Masters is showing up as of this morning.
