While reading the NY Times on my computer and seeing the notice of Mary Travers’ death, I was shocked. It was something I had never contemplated. PP&M had always been blocks in my foundation of life. I sat reading the short notice and tears came without thought. She was a true star, a light in the world, not looking for a camera to be on her, but to bring light to others.
I offer what hundreds of thousands, or millions, of others world wide must be feeling: a tremendous loss, an empty space, one less person who not only really “got it”, but who risked everything to give it to others, and great sympathy to her close friends and family.

In the late 80’s there was a marvellous PBS Christmas concert by Peter, Paul & Mary which I had on video and which we watched as a family every Chirstmas as we decorated the tree. It was an essential part of our family tradition – when the tree came home one of the children always fetched the tape!! I had always promised myself that I would one day treat myself to a concert by them, but with five children there were always other things to spend the money on. On Wednesday I knew for sure that particular dream had come to an end, but we know that Mary’s passion will live on through her music. Rest in peace and God bless you for all the memories that you have given to so many families – you will not be forgotten. Thank you to her family for sharing her with us.

I’ve been a fan since the fall of 1961 when a local New York TV Studio where my boyfriend worked played a demo of the group. They played the demo day after day, and all of us at MGM Telestudios became fans forever. A couple of years later, I lived on Bedford Street across the street from Noel and saw Mary riding her motorcycle all the time. What wonderful people they are. We will all miss Mary. May she sing forever in Heaven.

When I was growing up in the 60s we used to sing the songs of PP&M and the folk music movement left an indelible impression on me. As a college student in Boston in the 1980s, I was thrilled to finally see them at the Hynes Auditorium. It was one of my best concert memories and I watched every special they did for PBS. Like Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Odetta and others PP& M was about so much more than the music. They brought passion and commitment and was willing to sacrifice “fame & fortune” to support the causes that were important. My love and respect goes out to Mary’s family. She was great not only as a singer & activist but as a symbol of a woman in charge of her own life. RIP.

It is truly the end of an era. Their songs defined so many of the major political events of the last half decade. PPM concerts were events to which you could take younger people and have them experience what activism sounded like, and give them the feeling of the days when we all learned that each person’s actions mattered and could change the world. We are all diminished by her passing. I imagine her singing with the angels, and lobbying God Almighty.
