DICKENS

Impossible, impressive, and inimitable, Dickens presents an intimate portrait of the legendary author.

Anton Lesser as Dickens Dickens' stories and characters imprint themselves upon our brains, in the collective memory of the world. But one of the most dramatic, fascinating stories of them all is one that he never fully told: his own. His semi-autobiographical accounts of his childhood, romances, and despairs, all lie just under the surface of his novels and stories. But a good deal of his life was never brought to light, and at times he seemed determined to keep it that way.

This three-part series combines an exciting mixture of documentary and dramatic sequences to present the innermost parts of the author's life and mind to the world. With award-winning author and Dickens biographer Peter Ackroyd as host, PBS' DICKENS brings the complex genius to life.
