This is television that belongs to you.

The television universe is large and ever expanding. Our antennas, cables and satellite dishes today connect us to a blizzard of numbers and options. We can now spend an hour just clicking through the choices. On the surface it seems that anything a viewer could want must be there in that vast expanse.

But what do we really want from television? Is quantity equivalent to satisfaction? Does more necessarily equal better? When it comes to watching television, how do we define value?

For over 40 years, Thirteen/WNET New York has proposed that good television is more than a list of numbers, or a string of hours spent staring at a screen. For Thirteen, television that lives up to its potential is television that becomes a part of our lives, that speaks to our better nature, that enhances our perception and heightens our senses. For Thirteen, television's power comes not from being an end in itself, but from being a means to a stronger community, a more vibrant culture, a more engaged citizenry, a more democratic society.

That power is the essence and the value of public television. And this year, for the people of the New York metropolitan area, public television has become more vital and more purposeful than ever before.

This year, Thirteen/WNET and WLIW21 -- two respected gateways to the finest public television experiences -- joined forces to serve America's most diverse metropolis. United under a single licensee, Educational Broadcasting Corporation, these two dynamic media providers will give public television a stronger presence in the fabric of our community and a deeper resonance for people of all ages, backgrounds and interests.

In reviewing a year of marvelous achievements, this annual report visualizes the deep connections that public television forms with its viewers and their world.

Two stations. One parent. A tiny corner of an exploding universe. But a corner where what counts are not numbers, but people. This, then, is Educational Broadcasting Corporation.
