We are deeply grateful to have partners who have helped Thirteen be a positive and lasting force for change in people's lives. The individuals, foundations, and corporations listed on the following pages represent but a few examples of the significant support we received this year -- support that did nothing less than bring the mission of our stations to full and glorious life on the television screen, on the Internet, and in the classroom. Through their generosity, these donors enriched the lives of tens of millions of people, and without them much of the work described below would not be possible.

Three foundations -- The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the Ford Foundation -- helped bring the second season of Thirteen's Wide Angle, a groundbreaking international documentary series, to air. The only show of its kind on television, the series helps viewers make sense of the political, economic, and social forces shaping the world today. And in the process, it also touches lives, like Li Xiuying's story on page 8 demonstrates.

Thanks to the exceptional ongoing support of the Lilly Endowment Inc., Thirteen's weekly newsmagazine series Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly has created the only place on the dial where issues of religious, spiritual, and ethical significance are presented and discussed with a plurality of perspectives.

A number of corporate contributors provided major support that allowed Thirteen to continue presenting its ongoing (and much beloved) signature series, including American Century Investments for American Masters, Ernst & Young for Great Performances, and Ford and Canon, USA for Nature. Thirteen's local presentation of the NewsHour With Jim Lehrer -- a staple in households across the community -- was made possible by a team that included Aetna, Bank of New York, CIT, First Republic Bank, the Tri-state Lexus Dealers, and the Tri-state Mercedes-Benz Dealers.

Inspired by last year's challenge grant by trustee Josh Weston and his wife Judy, EBC Life Trustee Stephen Kellen and his wife Anna-Maria created the Kellen Arts Fund with a $2 million gift -- and helped ensure the vitality of arts and cultural programming at Thirteen for years to come. Likewise, the late Dr. Edward A. Raymond, a longtime friend to Thirteen, left a personal legacy to the station in the form of a $1 million endowment for science and nature programming.

Through the longtime support of the Cisco Foundation, last year alone Thirteen's National Teacher Training Institute helped the station train 6,274 educators nationwide on the uses of technology in the classroom -- reaching almost 125,000 children. The Citigroup Foundation and the Vivendi Universal Foundation helped Thirteen's Ed Online serve over 100,000 K-12 educators every month with professionally developed classroom resources via the Internet. And Consolidated Edison of New York's support of Thirteen's Literacy Center brought GED on TV, GED en español, and Learn to Read initiatives to adult learners looking to improve their lives -- almost 61,000 each month last year alone.

WLIW21 is grateful for the foundations that support it. The Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation underwrote Visions of Greece. WLIW thanks The O'Sullivan Children Foundation for their annual support of children's and Irish programming. The Rockefeller Foundation, Freeman Foundation, The Carnegie Corporation of New York, and Barclay's Capital were the national underwriters for BBC World News.

Alex G. Spanos was the principal underwriter for American Homelands: Greece, with additional support provided by Nicholas J. Bouras. Mexico Tourism Board and the National Endowment for the Arts were the national underwriters for Mariachi: The Spirit of Mexico.

Major local underwriting support was generously provided by North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital. Local underwriting of BBC World News came from TIAA-CREF. Healthplex Dental Insurance was the major sponsor of the four WLIW21 Reading FunDay events.

Charlotte Nichoson Ackert continues to be instrumental in the station's growth. WLIW thanks her for her time and support of the WLIW Gala. Olympus America, Inc. stepped up to the tee as a major sponsor of the WLIW golf event.

We are grateful for the opportunity to recognize those who have made a commitment to the work of Thirteen and WLIW and the people whose lives we touch, and we are deeply grateful to our donors for their leadership and vision.
