WLIW's vision for local community activity highlights public television's educational mission. WLIW21's Reading FunDay marked a FunDecade this year, celebrating 10 years of the station's signature community outreach project with events in New York City, Long Island, Westchester County, and New Jersey. In January 2002, WLIW expanded the event's reach on-line with WLIW's Reading FunPlace at www.wliw.org/readingfunplace. Featuring content for kids, parents and teachers to "Make Every Day a Reading FunDay," it is the most-visited site of the national Reading Rockets network.

WLIW's Video on Demand (VOD) online resource launched on the first day of school in September 2002 as part of a revolutionary statewide initiative -- and teachers in Nassau and Suffolk counties are leading the way. Lessons on topics in every subject area and grade level are now reaching students island-wide in ways not possible with traditional textbooks or even standard ITV programs. Long Island teachers and students represent only 16 percent of the New York State K-12 population yet account for 43 percent of the state's total usage, chalking up 217,000 downloads during the 2002-03 school year. On Long Island, classroom learning has become a more interactive experience, thanks to WLIW's VOD.

WLIW is a strong resource for adult students in the community as well, offering GED on TV as a way for viewers to earn their high school diplomas on their own schedule and over-the-air college credit courses for those unable to attend classes on campus.

This is TV with a vision. This is WLIW21 New York Public Television.
