Betsy Ashton joined the Board of Directors of The Friends of Thirteen, Inc. in October 1995. She currently serves as Chair of the Program Committee.  She was assistant secretary from January 2005 until June 2007, secretary from January until June 2007, chaired the Nominating Committee from 2009 until June, 2013, and has been an on-air spokesperson for the Friends since 1998.  After a twenty-year career as a radio and television news reporter and anchor at major stations in Washington, DC, New York City, and at CBS Network News, Betsy returned to her passion — fine arts.   Read More …

Judith Hope Blau designs and invents product and licensed concepts for the toy, gift, home furnishings and apparel industries. In addition, she is a published children’s author and illustrator.

Eric Coleman, a Friends of Thirteen board member since January, 2013, is a veteran theater actor, director, and dramaturg. His many acting credits include the title roles in NAT TURNER, IRA ALDRIDGE, HAMLET, and OTHELLO for such off-Broadway groups as the Negro Ensemble Co., Riverside Shakespeare, and The HADLEY Players. Susie French first joined the Board of Directors of The Friends of Thirteen, Inc. in 1987, staying until 1996, and rejoining in 2002. Susie presently serves as a member of the Thirteen/WNET Patron Committee. She is also involved with the Windows Project as a member of the steering committee. The Windows Project, based in New York City, aims to promote a cultural exchange between the US and Cuba through the creation and performance of Dance. Read More …

Carmela Haklisch joined the Board of Directors of The Friends of Thirteen, Inc. in June of 1996, was elected Second Vice Chairman in June 2003; First Vice Chairman in 2005; Chairman in June 2007; and Chairman Emeritus in May 2010. She has served as Chairman of the Friends Education Committee since 1999 and is a member of WNET’S Education Committee.  Read More …

Mary Ann Hawthorne joined the Board of Directors of The Friends of Thirteen, Inc. in October 2006.  During her thirty five years with the New York City Board of Education, she has been an Assistant Principal, Principal and Superintendent.  Ms. Hawthorne received honors at the White House, from the former President George W.  Bush. She was select as one of eight outstanding Principals in the United States. Ms. Hawthorne took a failing high school that was about to close and developed it to an outstanding high school in the Bronx. In addition, Ms. Hawthorne was asked to serve as a member of the Expert Review Panel for the United States Department of Education’s Research Department on Closing the Achievement Gap. Donald Karp joined the Board of Directors of The Friends of Thirteen, Inc. in October, 2002.  He has been a member of the Broad National Bank Board of Directors since 1972. He was named Vice Chairman of the Board in 1976, and was elected Chairman of the Board in 1985, in addition to Chief Executive Officer in 1991. An Attorney at Law, he practiced law until becoming CEO of the Bank in 1991.
