Current hybrid cars use gasoline to generate all of their electric power. In contrast, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) get their electric power primarily from the grid. So in most of the country, they will not require a new infrastructure–unlike other alternative-fuel vehicles. But in cities like New York, many car owners do not park in personal garages, so there is no readily available place to charge a PHEV. What can New York City do to smooth the transition to PHEVs? Mark Duvall, of the Electric Power Research Institute, presents the technological and economic issues that must be addressed to make PHEVs commercially viable. Arthur Kressner, director of research and development for Power Supply at Con Edison, discusses what changes are needed in the electrical supply system in order for it to successfully accommodate PHEVs. And Richard Drake, program manager at New York State Energy Research & Development Authority for alternative-fuel vehicle technology, focuses on working towards large scale deployment of PHEVs in New York State’s own fleet, in this fascinating discussion of the next step in green technology, brought to you by the New York Academy of Sciences.
