Tips for Teachers
Many students look forward to class trips. Spending time outside of the classroom and away from lectures and quizzes is a real treat. It can be even more enjoyable for those students who are prepared to get the most out of their field trip experience. Hundreds of students have participated in "What's Up In Factories?" factory tours. A few manufacturing representatives who have helped coordinate the tours offer teachers these tips for prepping students:
- Plan to take small groups when possible, or arrange in advance for the group to be divided and assigned to more than one tour guide.
- Ask the factory to send you information in advance about the company's history, products and processes. Share this information with your student tour group before visiting.
- Request product samples in advance, when possible.
- Talk with your student tour group about what aspects of the company they'd be most interested in, and share this with the tour guide in advance to ensure that the guide shows operations and shares information of interest to the group.
- Prepare questions in advance and encourage students to ask them of the tour guide or company representative to encourage an interactive experience.
- Discuss how students classes, such as algebra, English and social studies, will apply in their future jobs and ask company representatives to address this subject.
- Find out in advance whether the factory you're planning to visit employs any of the new manufacturing trends you've discussed with your class as part of "What's Up In Factories?"
- Ask students to look for any new trends that are in place.
- Request that the manufacturing facility offer an introductory or concluding talk, providing students an opportunity to ask questions.
