Introducing "What's Up in Factories?"to teachers and encouraging them to adopt the program within their classrooms is a demanding task that begins with teacher training workshops and tours. According to Marcelita Haskins, Coordinator for Instructional Services for WOSU-TV, Columbus, and Monica Medina, Public Relations and Outreach Coordinator for KPBS in San Diego, the devil is in the details and salvation is finding a partner.

Having successfully introduced the program, they offer other organizers some practical advice, including:

Partner with an organization, whether it be a business consortium or the central office for your region's school systems.

Bring aboard as many partners as you feel can contribute.

Ask your partner(s) to help get the word out. It is likely, if you've chosen your partner carefully, that the partner organization will have well-established relationships with area schools and businesses, which will be helpful in your efforts.

Request a copy of your school districts' mailing lists to create a database.

Contact people in writing. Whether you're inviting area businesses to the kick-off luncheon or seeking a partner, put your request in writing - early - and follow up with a telephone call to encourage participation. In today's information age, teachers and businesses are overwhelmed with material. To be sure they know about your program, call.

Maximize your reach by exhausting all your communications outlets. Prepare flyers to be distributed within the schools, contact the school districts' newsletter about including news of your event in an upcoming issue, and call the Chamber of Commerce about including news of your program within its publication.

Arrange for volunteers to help with mailings and follow-up as well as registration and logistics on the day of the workshop and tour.

Manage as many details as you can in advance, and share the joy - delegate!!
