Meet a Teacher Trainer

The best teachers are not just lecturers, but doers, says James Novotny, who will be conducting teachers' workshops during the 1995/1996 "What's Up In Factories?" program, providing practical insight about how to make the Thirteen/WNET educational project work in the classroom.

"Kids like to do," says Novotny, "and it's important for teachers to include plenty of activities and opportunities for interaction to optimize students' interest in learning." Teachers, too, learn best and teach best when doing, and Novotny plans to involve them in some thought-provoking activities during the teacher training workshops. Instructing his peers is not uncommon for Novotny. He has been teaching undergraduate education teachers at Kean College in Union, N.J., for the last seven years.

Now Supervisor of the Technology Department at Livingston, N.J. middle and high schools, Novotny has been teaching technology for eight years. He is past president of the Technology Education Association of New Jersey, earned his B.S. in Industrial Arts Education from Kent State University and his M.A. in Industrial Technology at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. He is currently working on his doctoral degree in Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York.
