Teen Leadership Advisory Board

The Teen Leadership Institute Advisory Council is comprised of a diverse group of students from throughout the Tri-state area. The Council provides input on planning and materials for the Teen Leadership Institute. In addition, the Council also offers input on other projects related to the teen market that are managed by Thirteen/WNET New York. Listed below are the outstanding teens who comprise TLI's 2001-2002 Advisory Council:

Enrique Arbelaez is a senior at Old Bridge High School West, Old Bridge, New Jersey. He is a member of Anyclub, an organization that prepares students to appreciate and celebrate the cultural diversity within the school. He is a member of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America); SALSA, a Hispanic-culture club; and the Spanish Honor Society. In addition, he plays ultimate Frisbee with the school's club, is a part of the Model Government Club, and was selected for his school's Peer Leadership class.

Rafael Batella is a senior at Ansonia High School, Ansonia, Connecticut. He is involved in varsity basketball, baseball and football.

Megan Carriero is a senior at Ansonia High School, Ansonia, Connecticut. She is in charge of the Connecticut branch of Students Against Violence in Connecticut (SAVCT). She studies theatre with ACES ECA, an after-school honors program. In addition to participating in chorus, yearbook, and the Human Relations Club at her school, she helps promote local music.

Maria Concepcion is a senior at Seward Park High School in New York, New York. She participates in the Alvin Ailey dance program as well as drama clubs at her school and at the Grand Street Settlement. She is a writer for Seward Park's newspaper, and is a member of the yearbook committee, the College Discovery Program, and the Commercial Print Agent's Forum. In addition, Maria works as a teen model.

Jeff Ford is a senior at Seward High School in New York, New York. He writes for his school newspaper, Seward Word, as well as working in his school's art gallery, Gallery 438. He is a participant in a mentoring program with Oppenheimer Funds, Inc. Three days a week, Jeff participates in a program for college-bound students called College Now, and takes classes in Career Opportunities and Marketing and College Writing. He is the secretary of his school's DECA (Distribute Education of America) Club and is involved in the Lower East Side Tenement Museum program.

Arlene del Rosario is a senior at Northern Highlands Regional High School, Allendale, New Jersey. She is the secretary of the Franco-Hispanic club and a member of Peer Leadership. She attends Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church, where she sings in the choir, teaches Sunday School, participates in the youth group's drama team, and is the secretary of the youth group. She works part-time at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living and also volunteers at the Hackensack Hospital. In addition, she is a varsity member of her school's tennis team and a member of the AmerAsian Tennis Association of NY/NJ. She participates in the Northeastern Jurisdictional Counsel on Youth Ministries and recently traveled to The People's Republic of China on a Mission of Peace.

Serena Fernandes is a senior at Old Bridge High School, Old Bridge, New Jersey. She is a member of her school's French Club, which promotes French language and culture through activities. She is a member of the French Honor Society, Service Club, and the Speech and Debate Team.

Rukon Hakim is a junior at Seward Park High School in New York, New York. He is the president of the Bengali International club as well as the assistant coordinator of Gallery 438. He is a member of his school's International Club and on the staff of the Seward World, his school's newspaper. He volunteers at the East Side Garden and serves as vice president of the Bangladesh Cricket Club in New York. Rukon volunteered at the New York Police Department following the September 11 attack.

Lisa Kim is a senior at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, New Jersey. She is a member of DECA and recently made it to the state competition. She is a member of TIGS (Teens in Garden State), an organization that attempts to keep kids busy without using drugs. Lisa is a member of her school's band and has helped it collect food for needy families during Thanksgiving. She has worked for the Center for Food Action in Mahwah, NJ. She has also traveled to the Dominican Republic to help build homes as part of a mission trip.

Marie-France Likanje is a senior at the High School for Health Professions and Human Services in New York, New York. Through the Church Youth Organization, she has worked with the nuns from St. Frances Cabrini Church to organize activities such as international dinners and dances. She is also a member of COSA, a committee that organizes school events, such as dances and fundraisers. She is a member of her school's Consultative Council, a group devoted to discussing and finding solutions for issues within the school. Marie-France serves as an after-school counselor for children ages 4-12 and has coordinated two talent shows and cooking and science projects for these children. She also has an internship at Lenox Hill Hospital, where she works in the pediatric department and patient transport.

Shannon McCook is a senior at Holmdel High School in Holmdel, New Jersey. She is the president of the Chinese Honor Society, her class' treasurer, and serves as a photographer and on the editorial board of The Sting, her high school's newspaper. She is a mentor to incoming freshmen and new students. Shannon is a member of the Chinese Culture Club and plays varsity softball and varsity soccer. She works at Pat Filkins Service Merchandise and for BFS Auctioneers and B&M Auctioneers. She is a Charity Auction Volunteer. She traveled to Shanghai, China last summer and studied Chinese at East China Normal University. Shannon's hobbies include photography, music, and t-shirt design.

Jared Rubinstein is a senior at Old Bridge High School West in Old Bridge, New Jersey. He is president of his school's French Club and the captain of the Academic Team. He belongs to the National Honor Society and French Honor Society. Jared is a member of the Old Bridge Writers' Guild, which is an organization that allows amateur writers to share their works and ideas. In addition, he participates in a class at his synagogue that meets with the Rabbi to discuss spiritual topics.

Vishal Sapra is a senior at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, New Jersey. He has served on Class Council all four years of high school and has served as President since his junior year. He is a member of DECA, the Highlands Leadership Team, and the Peer Mentor Program. Throughout high school, he has been a Head Delegate with Model United Nations, co-chaired the "Learn About Business" Conference on Market Economics, and participated in the debate team and computer club. Vishal also volunteers with the Upper Saddle River Rescue Squad.

Levy Solomon is a senior at Kings Park High School in Kings Park, New York. She is the president of BUTY (Bring Unity to Youth), and is involved in Peer Mediation, National Honor Society, National Foreign Language Honor Society (committee chairperson), and National Art Honor Society. She is a member of Students Against Drunk Driving, Book Club, Stage Crew, and sings soprano in the chorus. Levy is an officer with Students for Students, an organization that allows high school students to interact with 4th graders and teach them art. She also teaches foreign language to 4th graders through Language Club. She attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Philadelphia and learned about medical ethics, the global effects of infectious disease, public health, genetic research, and other subjects relevant to the medical field.

Aditya A.D. Vora is a sophomore at Kings Park High School in Kings Park, New York. He is an active member of Peer Mediation, a conflict-resolution group, and is the Treasurer of the Interact Club, an organization that allows its members to take part in community service projects - such as caroling at nursing homes, raking leaves for senior citizens, and participating in the Special Olympics program. A. D. is also the Treasurer of B.U.T.Y. (Bring Unity to Youth), a culture and diversity club, and is a member of the soccer and tennis teams.
