Problem: I can't view or access anything on the DVD-ROM and am getting error messages such as "the device is not ready."

Try this...

This most likely means you are trying to use a CD-ROM drive to read the DVD-ROM disc. This will not work.

Problem: The DVD-ROM drive tray is stuck.

Try this...

  • Press the Eject button-press it once, like a doorbell, and then stop. Otherwise, you may be sending repeated signals to open and close the tray.

  • Shut down, restart the computer, and try again.

  • Shut down the computer and unplug the power cord. Look for a pinhole on the front of the DVD-ROM drive. Straighten out a large paper clip. Gently push the paper clip straight into the hole until you feel it depress the release mechanism. This will sometimes cause the tray to pop out a fraction of an inch; other times you will have to pry it a little to get it started. Once you have enough tray sticking out to gently grab it with your fingers, you should be able to pull it out. If you have to force it, you may damage whatever DVD-ROM is inside.

  • Don't forget to enlist the assistance of student "experts" to help you and other students when problems arise. You assign leaders, monitors and helpers for other classroom tasks--do the same with your technology activities.
