Learning Activity 4:
Synthesis of First Three Lessons -- Colonial Period, Building America, and Mass Immigration

After completing their investigation of the three waves of Jewish immigration, students should engage in a class discussion about the similarities and differences in experiences of immigrants during each of the time periods. The conversation can revolve around the following questions:
  • What do these differences and similarities say about the American society over the years?

  • Compare and contrast incidents of discrimination and incidents of acceptance. What can you discover about American society and how it changed based on these incidents?

  • How did immigrants choose to hold on to their customs and religion at different times?

  • In what ways did they abandon or alter their old ways while living in the United States?

  • Was America the "golden land" for these immigrants? Why or why not?
