TEEN SMOKING SURVEY
We asked some high school students why they thought teens smoked, here's what they had to say.

Elliot, 16
School: City-As-School

I think that kids start smoking to try something new or look cool. I don't think Tobacco companies target young people. Even if they did I don't think that's why kids smoke.

Janna, 17
School: Frederick Douglass Academy

I think that teens begin to smoke because of peer pressure but continue to smoke because it is addictive. Tobacco companies intentionally target young people because our teen years are very impressionable and many ads are hinting that it is "cool" to smoke. Keep in mind that "cool" is a word widely used by teenagers.

Jerlena, 17
School: John F. Kennedy High School

Teens smoke because of peer pressure and they want to look cool. Companies target teens intentionally because they are weak-minded.

Bianca, 17
School: John F. Kennedy High School

I think most teens smoke cigarettes for many reasons such as relieving stress and peer pressure. It makes them feel better or makes them look cool. I don't think that tobacco companies intentionally target young people because teenagers have their own minds.

Jean, 18

I think that most kids smoke because they think it is a sign of adulthood and responsibility. Tobacco companies like most American companies want to exploit that independence and use it to target teens. So they create ads that like "Joe Camel" and "You've come a Long Way, Baby" to appeal to young people.

Malik, 15
School:

I think that teens smoke because either someone in their family smokes or they want to feel grown-up. I also feel that they do it because they just don't care about their health and how it will effect their lungs.
