THE NHA LEARNING CENTERS

The Latin American Experience website was created by students from the 1st to 12th grade at the four after-school Learning Centers of The Housing Authority of the City of Norwalk (NHA) in Norwalk, Connecticut.  This website explores the experience of being Latin American in Norwalk through artwork and written material collected from the NHA Learning Centers.  Some of the students explored the history of geography of their Latin American roots as well.  The material was organized for the website by students at the 20 West Avenue Learning Center under the guidance of the NHA Learning Center Web Design Instructor, David Bates Jr.  It is estimated that ten percent of all school-age children in Norwalk are residents of NHA.  NHA created these four learning Centers to students.  To counteract the widening educational gap between low-income minority and other students.  The NHA Learning Centers have won awards for innovative programs as well as much praise from government officials including U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman, U.S.  Congressman Christopher Shays and Norwalk Mayo Alex Knopp.  This is the second minority youth website the NHA Learning Center students have worked on for Channel Thirteen/WNET.  Last year they created "The Black Experience".

La Pagina de la Experiencia Latina Americana fue creada por estudiantes del primero al doceavo grado, de los cuatro centros educativos de la Housing Authority de  Norwalk (NHA) en el estado de Connecticut. Esta pagina explora la experiencia de ser Latino Americano en Norwalk, con pinturas y materiales escritos y colectados de los estudiantes que asisten a los 4 centros educativos de la NHA.  Algunos de los estudiantes exploraron la historia y geografia de sus raices Latino Americanas. Los materiales fueron organizados para la pagina por los estudiantes del Centro educativo del 20 de la west avenue bajo la supervision de el instructor de Disenos de pagina de la NHA, David Bates. Esta tiene una estimacion del 10 % de todas las edades de los ninos en las escuelas de Norwalk y residentes de NHA. Norwalk Housing Authority creo estos cuatro Centros Educativos para contrarestar el amplio faltante entre la educacion de las minorias con bajos ingresos y la educacion de otros estudiantes con mayores ingresos en sus familias. Los Centros Educativos de la Norwalk Housing Authority a ganado premios por inovar programas y han recibido muchos homenajes de oficiales guvernamentales tales como el Senador Joe Lieberman, el Congrecista Christopher Shays y el Alcalde de Norwalk, Alex Knopp. Esta es la segunda pagina que  jovenes de las minorias auspiciados por los Centros Educativos de la NHA  han creado para el Channel Thirteen/WNET. En el 2001 estudiantes de estos Centros crearon "The Black Experience".
