Project B.E.A.M. 10

The ASPIRA B.E.A.M. Ten Youth Leadership club is a special group of young people that have dedicated themselves to civic action. They are high school students who meet weekly to plan community service projects and discuss topics that relate to their world. They work closely with the ASPIRA B.E.A.M. Ten After School Program, but often extend their services throughout the city. The events they choose to participate in vary. These projects include beautification projects, they attend conferences and rally for student rights.

In December 2002 the ASPIRA B.E.A.M. Ten Youth Leadership Club participated in their second annual Leadership Toy Drive. For the last two years the ASPIRA B.E.A.M. Ten Youth Leadership Club has donated toys to the youth of Seneca Houses/Freeman Annex. Last year, after collecting over sixty new toys, some club members visited the Seneca Houses/Freeman Annex. One club member dressed up as Santa Claus and gave out toys to the youth at the settlement. It was wonderful to see the faces of the children who we were able to help. We have already started collecting new toys for this years drive.already started collecting new toys for this years drive.

In January the Youth Leadership Club worked with the young participants of the ASPIRA B.E.A.M. Ten After School Program on a service project. They worked hard wrapping gifts that were donated to the Program for the Three Kings Day extravaganza. These gifts were to be given out to the participants of the After School Program in celebration of Three Kings Day. They had a discussion on the meaning of a service project and what it means to give back.

Throughout the month of December, participants in the after school program learn about the Holidays of other cultures with lesson plans on Kwanzaa, Chanukah, Ramadan, Christmas and Three Kings Day. On January 6, we have a Three kings Extravaganza, which opens with performances from our dance program. Children who attend receive gifts and the evening culminates with a huge dinner celebration for all to enjoy.
Students were asked to interpret the holiday spirit in these drawings and writings for you to enjoy.
