volcano eruptingThis lesson was designed for teachers who are already familiar with image-creating programs, such as ClarisWorks, Illustrator, or Photoshop.

Using SAVAGE EARTH, the wNetStation Web companion piece to the SAVAGE EARTH television series, and related links, students explore the physics of tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Students identify key terms and related concepts. They create animations using simple paint programs and shareware programs: GifConverter and GifBuilder for the Mac, and Paint Shop Pro (version 3.11) and GIF Movie Gear for the PC.

Students will be able to:

  Research either tsunamis, earthquakes, or volcanoes extensively on the Web.
  Visit Web sites that feature real-time, live-cam views of active volcanoes; view computer-generated simulations of tsunamis or earthquakes.
  Learn key terms and concepts related to the study of tsunamis, earthquakes, or volcanoes.
  Design a storyboard consisting of key frames for their animations.
  Use paint software or a scanner to create images to be incorporated into their final animation.
  Convert or export their images to the GIF (Graphic Image File) format for incorporation into their animations.
  Publish their animated GIFs on the Web (optional).
