Helpful and free online resources for parents about school programs, transitions, milestones, Regents examinations, and the high school admissions process, among others.

The New York City Department of Education

The NYC Department of Education (DOE) website has important information about NYC schools. By clicking on the blue tab near the top of the page labeled Parents and Families, you can access information specifically written for parents.

The New York City Department of Education Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy

On the DOE’s Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy (OFEA) homepage, you will find more inforamtion about upcoming events, along with news and resources for parents. You can even submit questions.

New York State Department of Education

Visit the official website for the New York State Department of Education. Click on the bar labeled Parents/Students to find information about special education services, PBS – Parents, and information on school report cards.

The U.S. Department of Education

The U.S Department of Education can be very helpful for parents. At the top of the page, click on Parents and you will be taken to a page with resources written for parents. You will be able to download free booklets on how to work with your child in reading, math and science, tip sheets to help with homework, and many other resources including information on student financial aide.

Doing What Works Clearinghouse

A new feature on the U.S. Department of Education’s website is the Doing What Works Clearinghouse. While this site was developed with teachers in mind, parents will also find many of the video clips and materials on teaching strategies useful.

National Institute for Literacy

The federally-funded National Institute for Literacy has free resources for you to download. Clicking on “Publications” at the top of the page on the right hand side will give you a list of free resources. Parents who want to help their young children become good readers will find the resources like A Child Becomes a Reader and Big Dreams to be very helpful.

The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) website gives you access to information on parent involvement, student success, child safety and education funding.

Public Broadcasting System (PBS)
http://www.pbs.org/parents/
More information on resources developed by the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) is available at the PBS website. Here, you can receive more information on child development, raising boys, raising girls, getting ready for school and play PBS KIDS games.

The Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center

The Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center provides information on Head Start preschool programs and tips for parents. If you click on “For Parents” on the left hand side of the opening page, you will find many resources developed for parents including information on how young children grow and develop, everyday parenting tips and learning activities and games to do with your young child. All of the materials are free.
