The Beaufort Wind Scale

BEAUFORT NUMBER KM/H MPH DESCRIPTION
0 less than 1 calm; smoke rises vertically
1 1-5 1-3 light air: not enough to move a wind vane, but shows in smoke drift
2 6-11 4-7 light breeze: wind felt on face, leaves rustle, wind vanes moved by wind
3 12-19 8-12 gentle breeze: leaves and small twigs in constant motion, enough to blow a light flag
4 20-29 13-18 moderate: raises dust and loose paper, moves small branches
5 30-39 19-24 fresh: small trees in leaf begin to sway, crested wavelets form on inland waters
6 40-50 25-31 strong: large branches move, umbrellas used with difficulty
7 51-61 32-38 near gale: whole trees in motion, inconvenience in walking against the wind
8 62-74 39-46 gale: wind breaks twigs off trees, making walking difficult
9 75-87 47-54 strong gale: slight damage occurs to building structures
10 88-102 55-63 storm: trees uprooted, considerable damage
11 103-121 64-72 violent storm: widespread damage
12 over 122 over 73 hurricane
