Feeding the Birds

Follow these procedures:

1. Use the chart below to record your observations.

2. Place four of the paper birds in front of you and estimate how many seeds you believe each bird would receive from your bag if each bird must have the same number of seeds. Record your estimate on the chart. Now place an equal number of seeds on each bird. How many seeds did each bird receive? Record your answer on the chart.

3. Place one more bird in front of you. Estimate how many seeds you believe each bird would receive. Record your estimate on the chart. Now divide the seeds equally among the birds. How many seeds did each bird receive? Record your answer on the chart.

4. Place five more birds in front of you. Estimate how many seeds you believe each bird would receive. Record your estimate on the chart. Now divide the seeds equally among the birds. How many seeds did each bird receive? Record your answer on the chart.

5. Place 10 more birds in front of you. Estimate how many seeds you believe each bird would receive. Record your estimate on the chart. Now divide the seeds equally among the birds. How many seeds did each bird receive? Record your answer on the chart.

6. Place five more birds in front of you. Estimate how many seeds you believe each bird would receive. Record your estimate on the chart. Now divide the seeds equally among the birds. REMINDER: Seeds may not be cut up or split apart. How many seeds did each bird receive? Did every bird receive a seed? Record your answer on the chart.

7. Complete the questions on the back of this sheet.

Concert Seating Assignment

You have been assigned the task of designing a seating arrangement for an upcoming charity concert. Using 24 color tiles to represent chairs, design as many different combinations of seating arrangements you can. Remember that the director of the orchestra has requested that each row contain the same number of chairs so that things are neat and orderly. Once you have designed a possible arrangement, record your information in the space below or on the back. There are a number of different possibilities so don't give up too easily!
A possible arrangement would look like this:

The following represents this arrangement: 24 chairs divided by _______ rows equals _______ chairs in each row, and can be written as 24 _______ = _______.
