The year-long science project demonstrated in Program 3 is an excellent example of project based learning. The project, entitled The Energy and Education Industry Project is a collaboration between the Bethune Academy's Houston school district and the local energy industry. The project has an obvious real-world dimension and relevant goal - to support the education of local students for local industry - as well as directly meeting Texas state standards for geology.

The project's goals are also clear on a day-to-day basis in the classroom. The ultimate objective for each student or group of students working collaboratively is to strike oil. Along the way, there are many project components that function almost as mini-projects, making the final goal an attainable one. Students use technology, from the Web to PowerPoint, to interact with the content of the project in a variety of ways at all stages - planning, execution, and presentation.

QuickTime Required Megon Bartley  I LOVE TO SEE THE EXCITEMENT WHEN THEY START IN MY CLASS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, AND SCIENCE IS ONE OF THEIR LEAST FAVORITE SUBJECTS, BUT BY THE END OF THE YEAR THEY LOVE IT, AND IT'S ONE OF THEIR MOST FAVORITE SUBJECTS."

QuickTime Required Megon Bartley  ONE OF THE THINGS I'VE NOTICED ABOUT USING THE COMPUTERS AND WEB-BASED LEARNING IS THAT THE STUDENTS ARE MUCH MORE IN TUNE AND FOCUSED ON WHAT IT IS THEY'VE BEEN ASKED TO DO, AS FAR AS RESEARCHING AND COLLECTING DATA AND INFORMATION. MANY OF THE WEB PAGES ARE INTERACTIVE, WHERE THE STUDENTS HAVE INPUT AND HAVE CHOICES INTO WHAT'S HAPPENING.
