The collaborative project featured in Program 1 is the Frosty Readers Project (http://viking.stark.k12.oh.us /~ptk1nc/frosty2001).

Frosty Readers is an online literature project created by Technology Integration Specialist Susan Silverman to bring some variety to the long and often dull post-holiday days of winter. The project requires participants to find literature with a winter theme, complete activities suggested by reading that literature, and share their work on the Frosty Readers Web site. The project's creator also asked participants to submit the state learning or National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) that their work addressed.

IT TAKES A TRADITIONAL LESSON PLAN AND GIVES TEACHERS A WHOLE BUNCH OF NEW IDEAS OF HOW THEY CAN ENRICH IT… AND FOR CHILDREN IT'S VERY EXCITING FOR THEM TO BE NOT ONLY CONSUMERS OF INFORMATION, BUT PRODUCERS AS WELL. THEY ARE VERY THRILLED TO SEE THEIR CREATIVE WORK ON A WEB SITE, AND THEY ARE EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO SHARE WITH FAMILY MEMBERS AND PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

As we see in The Internet in Action, the teachers at Boyle Road Elementary school have used Frosty Readers as a starting place for a host of activities covering many curriculum areas, including math, art, and writing. Collaboration here is multifaceted: teachers in one school collaborate with each other; teachers collaborate with students; teachers collaborate with teachers and students in other schools; and students collaborate with students in other schools.

The collaborative aspect of this project, along with its interdisciplinary approach, sparks enthusiasm for both teachers and students. For the students, the experience of having a "real" audience lends authenticity and purpose to the task of communicating clearly using language arts, as well as other academic skills.

Phyllis Reese  THEIR STORIES WERE OUTRAGEOUS. EVERY ONE WAS BETTER THAN THE OTHER. YOU LOOK AT THEM - THIS IS NOT A SECOND GRADER WHO IS WRITING THIS, I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS. IT HAS A BEGINNING. THERE ARE STORY ELEMENTS TO IT. THERE'S A CONCLUSION TO IT. THESE ARE STORIES THAT LOOK LIKE THEY WERE WRITTEN BY THIRD GRADERS. WHY? BECAUSE OF THE ENTHUSIASM. THEY WERE TOTALLY INTO IT. THE PROJECT JUST SPARKED SO MUCH DETAIL, AND THAT DETAIL WENT RIGHT INTO THE WRITING.
