Kurt Johnson is a Utah Educational Television Teacher of the Year.

Kurt Johnson, NTTI Teacher of the Year for Utah Educational Television, currently teaches in a multi age classroom at the Edith Bowen Laboratory School on the campus of Utah State University. He is an outstanding teacher in every aspect.

Kurt's current work with technology and curriculum projects include studying the influence of computer 2-D and 3-D software on traditional student art work in the elementary setting. He presented at the 2000 UCET conference on this subject. Kurt is also studying the feasibility of implementing a school-wide electronic portfolio storage system. This has involved him studying several varied issues, including portfolio management, use of technology for teachers, time and equipment requirements. His most current project is looking at ways to effectively utilize desktop video editing with his 3rd and 4th grade students. In cooperation with Apple Computer, he is using a small digital video camera and iMovie 2 software to cover the topic of Utah agriculture. Kurt's prior work in technology and curriculum include serving as a Teacher Specialist in the Morgan County School District. In that position, he served as a Master Teacher Model and assisted in the facilitation of school level professional staff improvement opportunities, curriculum articulation and alignment, and technology implementation and coordination.

Kurt also served as the 5th/6th Grade Level Internet Inservice Instructor for the Morgan school district from October 1995 to March 1996. There he taught a ten hour class to 5th and 6th grade staff on the background and use of Internet applications, Internet use in the classroom, and e-mail and provided on-going assistance in the use of the Internet and e-mail in the classroom. Kurt's many recognition's for his work with technology and curriculum include:

  • 1995 US West/UtahLink Teacher Network Project Participant
  • Reach for the Sky Teacher "Math and Science Telecommunications for Teaching and Learning" from August 1995 to July 1996, a year long project focusing on the use of telecommunications to enhance math and science instruction between project teachers from Utah, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Wyoming
  • Apple Distinguished Educator, February 1998, one of 100 educators from the U.S. and Canada selected for this honor. He still continues to work in this capacity, developing innovative curriculum in partnership with Apple's Education Department.
  • Box Elder School District Guest Instructor "Macintosh for Dummies" in October 1997 where he taught an eight hour course designed to present the fundamentals of Macintosh operation and provide answers to student questions.
