Activity Two

Scenario 1: Oil Blocks the Way

You have been sent to a landlocked principality that recently discovered a large source of oil. The people who live there have a highly educated work force. Two major factions have conflicting goals. The first wants to develop the country by growing economically and is looking forward to the influx of outsiders that the oil industry will bring. The second wants to keep the outside world away, and is concerned about the impact of oil drilling on the environment. Those who live here generally have a good standard of living. Unemployment is low. The government is democratic, but this issue seems to be a source of growing conflict. What will you recommend?

Scenario 2: Cold Roads to Change

You have been sent to an area rich with timber, oil, fish, and game, but you are in a remote cold area near the South Pole. You have poor infrastructure. Access to any major transportation routes is problematic. The older people living here, proud of their simple way of life, are happy relying on themselves. But the younger people are not content. They have a strong sense of curiosity about the outside world. The people you encounter want to learn about different cultures and the effect their economy has on the environment. They are afraid, however, that once their young people see what the outside world has to offer, their culture will be destroyed. If they exploit their natural resources, they will bring great economic prosperity to the people. What will you recommend?

Use the following questions as a guide when crafting your recommendation:

What do you hope to accomplish on the island? Consider the people, culture, and physical environment.

What do you want to improve? Preserve?

What obstacles will you face in bringing about change?

What advantages/resources can you leverage to overcome these obstacles?

Is your solution effective in the short-term? In the long-term?

What do we have to do to make our solution sustainable for the long run?
