The best resource for learning to use the HyperStudio multimedia application is the HyperStudio Tutorial which is included when you purchase HyperStudio.
Here are a few pointers and tips to get you started:
HyperStudio Tools Palette

Each tool is described in the chart below. Placement in the chart corresponds to placement in the Tools Palette.
The Browse Tool: Use to activate objects with attached actions (usually buttons).
Button Tool: Use for editing or moving an existing button.
Arrow/Pointer Tool: Use to edit, move, resize, or delete objects, including buttons, text objects, and graphic objects.
Graphic Object Tool: Use for editing or moving graphic object.
Sound Object Tool: Use for adding or changing sounds.
Text Object Tool: Use for editing or moving text objects.
Selection Tools (rectangle, oval, and lasso): Use to capture a rectangular, oval, or freehand (lasso) area. Once you've selected an area, you can copy, cut, delete, move, flip, rotate, or resize it.
Paint Brush Tool: Use to draw freehand.
Spray Paint Tool: Scatters tiny dots of the currently selected color or pattern.
Fill Tool: Fills an enclosed shape with the currently selected color or pattern.
Eraser Tool: Erases painted objects.
Line Tool: Draws straight lines.
Pencil Tool: Draws freehand shapes.
Rectangle, Oval, and Rounded Rectangle Tools: Draws rectangles, ovals, and rounded rectangles.
Paint Text Tool: Paints text onto the background.
Magnifying Glass: Zooms in for a closer look at an area.
Eyedropper: Click a color from the background to change your current painting color.
In HyperStudio's "Objects" menu, you may add a button, text, object, or graphic.
Adding a Button

To create a button, click "Objects" from the menubar and select "Add a button." Follow the directions to give the button a shape, color, name, and/or designating action. After selecting "Add A Button" from the Objects menu, the Button Appearance Dialog box appears and allows you to design the look of your button. It also allows you to attach designating actions such as sound and animation, and direct the movement from one card to the next. To designate an action, click "Actions" in the Button Appearance dialog box.
To add sound, choose "Play a Sound". The Tape Deck dialog box will appear. This will allow you to select an existing sound or record a new one. To play a sound, choose a sample sound then click the Play button to hear it. Click Disk Library to sample existing sounds form a disk file. Click "Play" to verify the sound you want to add to your button. Check to see that the volume is at an acceptable level. To use the sound, click "Ok".
To record your own sounds, choose "Record" from the Tape Deck dialog box. (Record is disabled if you don't have a microphone.) Speak into the microphone. If the green level indicator barely moves, then the sound is too soft. If the red level indicator is at the top of its range, you're "over-driving" the microphone and the quality of your recording will suffer. Click "Play" to hear your sound. If you're not satisfied with the recording, simply record it again. When you're done, name the new sound and click "Ok." Sound takes up a lot of memory, so use it strategically.
Adding a Graphic Object
Graphics can be added in two ways. You can either: 1) copy an image and paste it directly onto your card; or 2) choose "Add a graphic object" from the "Objects" menu, open the graphics file, select the graphic, and click OK.
Adding a Text Object

To create a text object, click "Objects" from the menubar and select "Add a text object." Follow the directions to give the text field a shape, color, name and/or designating action.
Creating an Animation.
To create an animation in HyperStudio, choose "Add a Button" from the Objects menu. When you get to the Actions dialog, select "Play Animation." HyperStudio will display a dialog box which asks you where you want to get your image from. You can choose either your Current Card or Disk Library.
If you select Current Card as the source of your animation, you will immediately be able to select the graphic to be animated. Using the lasso or the square selector, pick a portion of the screen to animate.
If you choose Disk Library, HyperStudio will display the Standard File Selector dialog and allow you to pick an image file as the source of your path animation.

- Recording a Path
The first frame of your animation should be on your card, surrounded by flashing dots. Move the image to the point where you want your animation to begin. Press down the mouse button and drag a path for your animation to follow. When you are finished, release the mouse button to stop recording. After you've set the path or location for your animation, you'll be presented with the Animation dialog.
There are a number of settings you can adjust to make the animation appear just as you want it to. These settings are explained on page 84 of your HyperStudio manual.
- Creating a Cel Animation
Create a new card and use the paint tools to draw the foundation for your animation. For example, if you want to create an animation of a plan sprouting and growing, your initial cel might consist of a bare patch of soil.
When your initial cel is finished, go to the "File" menu and choose "Export Screen." Name your animation. HyperStudio will automatically number the cels you export. For the example above, you might name the file "Plant.01". Modify the drawing slightly. The second cel might only show a little bit of green sprouting up from the soil. When this cel is finished, open the File menu and choose "Export Screen" again. Name this cel "plant.02."
Repeat this process as many times as you need to until your animation is complete. Add your finished animation to the stack using the instructions at the beginning.
