The Proof of the Century!

Students learn to do Web research in the field of mathematics. They learn about mathematical proofs and apply them to the Pythagorean theorem. Students also explore the general ideas of Fermat's Last Theorem. (Note: the proof of this theorem is over 200 pages long and covers some very difficult modern mathematics. A complete explanation of the proof is not possible at the secondary level. Pythagorean proof

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

Examine and demonstrate an understanding of the Pythagorean theorem.
Explain and demonstrate an understanding of Pythagorean triples.
Explain and demonstrate a basic understanding of Fermat's Last Theorem.
Develop a basic understanding of the usage of mathematical proofs.
Understand the history of proving Fermat's Last Theorem and appreciate the variety and complexity of mathematical ideas needed to solve this problem.
Identify several important mathematicians who are living and solving problems.

Use of Internet: The Internet will be used in this lesson as a tool for research.
